synopsis
STAGES is a moving and surprisingly funny vérite exploration of the unexpected power of the simple act of storytelling. The film unravels in New York City's oldest community center, where a group of older Puerto Rican women and inner-city youth are brought together to create an original play out of the stories of their lives. Min (19, Burma) questions his families sacrifice as immigrants, Aurelio (18, Brooklyn) comes face to face with the infidelity of his fiancé, Lucy (82, Puerto Rico) finds the courage to dramatize her triumph over an abusive husband. Weaving together themes of immigration, evolution, aging and coming of age, Stages offers an intimate portrait of an unlikely ensemble, transformed by the liberating power of their own stories-- first as they are spoken across generations, and later when they are performed for a sold-out show.

biography
Collaboratively directed by twelve people, Stages is the Meerkat Media Collective’s first feature-length film. Since 2005, Meerkat Media has also produced over twenty short films, which have been featured in film festivals and screenings nationally and internationally. Through skill sharing and collective authorship, Meerkat Media strives to create works with a non-hierarchical and inclusive creative process. Meerkats in a group writing session The collective produced Stages collaboratively, shooting, editing and reviewing footage using an adapted consensus process. Collective members consensed on every trailer and in-progress cut of the film, and decided collectively how to proceed with each step of the project. Feedback was periodically solicited from the educators facilitating the Evolve Theater Project, and later, from the participants themselves.
