synopsis The film follows the creation of Morocco’s first-ever Hip Hop festival, called ‘I Love Hip Hop in Morocco’, from its inception all the way to the stage. Morocco is an Arab-Muslim, Third world, North-African country, ruled by a king in a so-called democratic monarchy. Women wear veils, prayer is a must on Fridays, and wealth is divided among the few, while most live in poverty.
Somewhat surprisingly, however, is the emergence in Morocco of an indigenous Hip Hop movement, made up of rappers, DJs, breakdancers and graffiti artists who use their native language & culture to express their worldview through the imported medium of Hip Hop. Within the movement, we find history, rivalries, issues, conflicts, and, above all, reflections on the meaning of Hip Hop and its birthplace, America.
biography Joshua Asen is currently an ESL teacher at a public elementary school in a largely Arabic-speaking neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. He and Jenn became partners during their time at Brown University, where he studied music and French. After college, Josh went on to work as an international liaison for Roc-a-Fella records. In 2004, Josh received a Fulbright grant to study the effects of American Hip Hop on Moroccan youth culture. He linked up with Jenn, who was a film student at the time, and the idea for I LOVE HIP HOP IN MOROCCO was born and blossomed.
Jennifer Needleman is a writer/director/editor currently residing in Venice, CA. She and co-Director Josh became best friends during their time at Brown University, where she studied creative writing and was the resident Hip Hop DJ. After college, Jennifer went on to become the features reporter and editor for the historic Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper. Two years later, she was accepted into the Graduate Screenwriting Program at the USC School of Cinema-Television. She and Josh formed Rizz Productions Inc. in 2004 and embarked upon the creation of their first feature-length film, I LOVE HIP HOP IN MOROCCO.
